No selo, vemos em primeiro plano um Gari que trabalha com a equipe de caminhão, estes que são os responsáveis pela limpeza mais “pesada” e tão fundamental para a cidade.
Após encontrar com uma outra profissional da limpeza urbana ele acena para ela. – a Gari que leva o carrinho consigo tem sua atuação um tanto mais pontual porém de igual importância em manter a limpeza de nossas cidades.
Unificando a imagem, as cores escolhidas objetivam ilustrar a diversidade de nosso povo.
A técnica de ilustração digital foi utilizada para a realização deste selo.
Profissão: Gari
Com esta primeira emissão, os Correios dão início à série “Profissões”, que lançará selos postais relativos à 5 profissões brasileiras entre os anos de 2021 e 2025. O primeiro componente da série é o Gari, profissional de grande importância, responsável pela limpeza e varrição das vias públicas. O selo também traz a representação do coletor, trabalhador responsável pela recolha do lixo doméstico.
Historicamente, o nome “Gari” para designar os profissionais de higienização urbana vem de 1830 quando, no Rio de Janeiro, o governo imperial contratou o francês Aleixo Gary para a limpeza e irrigação da cidade. Sob este contrato, também ficou estipulado o transporte do lixo do Rio para Sapucaia, dando assim início aos serviços de coleta. Popularmente, estes profissionais são conhecidos por tal nome até hoje, podendo esta definição se estender, no senso comum, aos trabalhadores coletores de lixo doméstico. Apesar disso, existe diferença entre o gari (limpeza das vias) e o coletor (lixo doméstico), sendo que a confusão entre os termos é reveladora invisibilidade e o pouco conhecimento da sociedade referente a relevância destes profissionais.
Desde o século XIX até o presente, sabemos que o trabalho dos garis e dos coletores é essencial para a manutenção sanitária das cidades. O tratamento correto do lixo feito por estes profissionais permite a manutenção da higiene geral das ruas e o controle de doenças. Em contrapartida, eles estão diariamente expostos a condições difíceis de trabalho, e arriscam sua saúde quando precisam lidar com agentes tóxicos, poluição, inclusive sonora, contínua das ruas e as variações temporais as quais são expostos por trabalharem ao ar livre.
Os garis e coletores também passam por problemas de pouco reconhecimento profissional, vindo tanto da população quanto no ambiente de trabalho. Muitas vezes, são percebidos pelas pessoas em geral como “invisíveis”, mascarados pelos seus uniformes e, por lidarem diretamente com o lixo, são pouco valorizados. Entretanto, estes mantenedores do espaço público frequentemente demonstram atitudes positivas perante as condições adversas, sendo isso uma grande estratégia de defesa para lidar com a difícil jornada e provações cotidianas.
Este selo postal busca ressaltar a importância da profissão dos garis e coletores para a limpeza das vias públicas, essencial para a
manutenção da saúde de todos. O reconhecimento desta categoria profissional por meio do selo postal é, além de uma justa homenagem, a tentativa de passar uma mensagem imagética destes trabalhadores como cidadãos de grande relevância.

About the Stamp
On the stamp, we can notice in the foreground, a Gari (garbageman) who works along its truck team, the ones in charge for the so-called “heavier” cleaning, something essential for the city. After meeting with another urban sanitation worker he waves her – the Gari who weeps the streets has its duty more located but equally important in order to keep our cities clean.
Merging the images, the chosen colors look for illustrate the diversity of our (Brazilian) people.

With this first issue, Correios Brasil starts the “Professions” series, which will release postage stamps related to 5 Brazilian professions between the years 2021 and 2025. The first component of the series is the Gari, a professional of great importance, responsible for cleaning and sweeping public roads. The stamp also brings the representation of the collector, a worker responsible for collecting household waste.
Historically, the name “Gari” to designate urban sanitation professionals comes from 1830 when, in Rio de Janeiro, the imperial government hired the Frenchman Aleixo Gary to clean and irrigate the city. Under this contract, the transport of garbage from Rio to Sapucaia was also stipulated, thus initiating the collection services. Popularly, these professionals are known by this name to this day, and this definition can be extended in common sense to the workers collecting household garbage. Despite this, there is a difference between the gari (street cleaner) and the collector (domestic garbage collector), and the confusion between the terms reveals the invisibility and the little knowledge of society regarding the relevance of these professionals.
Since the nineteenth century until today, we know that the work of the streets cleaner and collectors is essential for the sanitary maintenance of the cities. The correct treatment of the garbage done by these professionals allows the maintenance of the general hygiene of the streets and the control of diseases. On the other hand, they are daily exposed to difficult working conditions, and risk their health when they have to deal with toxic agents, pollution, including noise, continuous pollution of the streets, and the temporal variations to which they are exposed because they work outdoors.
The garbage collectors and streets cleaners also experience problems of little professional recognition, both from the population and in the work environment. Many times, they are perceived by people in general as “invisible”, masked by their uniforms, and, because they deal directly with garbage, they are little valued. However, these maintainers of public space often demonstrate positive attitudes in the face of adverse conditions, this being a great defense strategy to deal with the difficult journey and daily trials.
This postage stamp seeks to highlight the importance of the garbage collectors’ and streets cleaners profession in cleaning public thoroughfares, which is essential for the maintenance of everyone’s health. The recognition of this professional category by means of a postage stamp is not only a fair homage, but also an attempt to convey an imagetic message of these workers as very important citizens.
